September is a month of celebration for Vicenza: in fact, the two most important events of the year take place, namely THE FESTA DEI OTO in honor of the Madonna and THE GOLD FAIR!
8 September: Feast of the Madonna of Monte Berico.
For the city of Vicenza it is the festival par excellence, awaited and loved by all the inhabitants of Vicenza living in the city and in the province. September 8 is the patronal feast of the city of Vicenza since 1978, when the Pope Pope Paul VI proclaimed the Madonna di Monte Berico patron saint of the city. Since then, solemn celebrations have been held every year in honor of Our Lady of Monte Berico on the day of her birth.
Devotion to the Virgin has probably characterized Vicenza’s religiosity as early as the century. XIII; however, it is with the birth of the Sanctuary of Monte Berico and the subsequent settlement of the Servants of Mary that the extraordinary devotion of the faithful takes shape. The Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monte Berico dominates the city of Vicenza from the hill located south-west of the city, with a breathtaking view over the whole city.
But the Feast of the Madonna does not only have a religious significance for Vicenza.
Traditionally, in fact, the so-called “Festa dei Oto” represents an opportunity for the people of Vicenza to relive moments of celebration and conviviality. In the days preceding and following September 8, the city is literally “invaded” by the festive and colorful caravan of the Luna Park, which has always found its classic location in the large green space of Campo Marzo.

Initially called the Guisega (dialectal correction of Wisega – lawn), the denomination of Campo Marzo appears for the first time in an exchange of 1074. The origin of the name “Campo Marzo” is uncertain: the most reliable interpretation goes back to the term Marso dialect, which indicated a wet, rotten, marshy area (rotten in Latin) due to the frequent floods of the Retrone. Another hypothesis, more fascinating but doubtful, made the toponym derive from “field of Mars”, the name given to places used by Roman soldiers for their martial exercises. There is no reliable source on military use in Roman times, the marsh in fact served above all as a geographical limit in the event of a siege south of the city.
In the sixties of the twentieth century, Viale Dalmazia in the eastern part was paved to ensure better usability, especially during the patronal feast of 8 September, when the park welcomes the rides.
In spring 2009, the municipal administration launched a redevelopment project for the reorganization of the green. The project sees the construction inside the park of a summer branch of the Bertoliana Civic Library; also a free wifi service, an area dedicated to outdoor shows; finally, areas reserved for dogs, sports courses and playrooms for children. The project was donated to the city by Aldo Cibic and developed by the research and design center of his studio.
