Between the hills and mountains, in the greenery of nature there is a city renowned for its history, its name is Bassano del Grappa.
Its main monument thanks to which it enjoys a well-known fame is the “Ponte Vecchio“, also called the “Ponte degli Alpini”; Bassano is in fact also known for its historical traditions with the Alpine troops during the world wars.the river that flows under this bridge is called the Brenta river and is one of the main ones in Veneto.
The bridge was commissioned to the famous architect from Vicenza Andrea Palladio in the sixteenth century but was destroyed by a flood in 1748 and rebuilt with some modifications in 1751 by Bartolomeo Ferracina.
Before 1928 the name of this city was Bassano Veneto, but after the second World War, in memory of the fallen in a fierce battle which took place in the Mountain Grappa, where about 23 thousand soldiers lost their lives, the name was changed to Bassano del Grappa . On the top of the mountain was erected a military shrine that appears as a pyramid formed by five circles superimposed.
In addition to the history and the museums and monuments that speak about it extensively, there is one thing to know about this city… it is the home of GRAPPA: an Italian distillate made from wine waste. There is even a grappa museum (Poli) and of course there are distilleries that offer tastings of their grappas. This production is traditional.
