Archaeological Area of Corte dei Bissari

Beneath the famous Piazza dei Signori and under the Palladian Basilica, you can find the fascinating archaeological area of Corte dei Bissari, which leads the visitor to discover the history and the development of Vicenza starting from its oldest urban nucleus.

The itinerary covers a 150 square meters area and displays both the preserved ancient structures and objects and archaeological finds recovered during the excavations and dating back to the period from the protohistoric age to the late Roman age (7th century BC – 5th century A.D). Of particular value, a precious golden cross from the Lombard age.

Although Vicenza is famous especially for its sixteenth-century architecture, without a doubt it is very interesting to explore its distant past which, starting from the foundation of the city by the ancient Venetians, has literally laid the foundations for the great Palladian Renaissance.
